Amazon’s integral partner – The story of the Brazilian Cerrado

As we celebrate Amazon week, we take a look at Brazil’s second biggest biome – the Cerrado. Greater size than Western Europe, this world’s most biodiverse savanna, vital to absorbing carbon and slowing down climate change, provides crucial ecosystem services to Brazil’s people, wildlife, and the Amazon itself. Yet as Amazon sees a reprieve from damaging deforestation rates, the Cerrado continues to face an existential crisis, at a time when no one on earth can afford it.

The Brazilian Mission to the EU and The Nature Conservancy invite you to a dedicated webinar on the Cerrado. In this session, leading Cerrado experts will show us the hidden secrets of this unique Biome; its history, its nature, and its people. The webinar will also facilitate a discussion on the greatest challenges currently facing this vulnerable biome and explore the opportunities to save and restore it.

When:   17th September, 09:00-11:00 (Brazil)/ 14:00-16:00 (Brussels)

Road to Belem: Shaping the future of wetlands in the climate agenda

The event hosted by MEP Annalisa Corrado in the European Parliament and organised with the support of Wetlands International Europe, Environmental Justice Foundation,  Instituto SOS Pantanal and Chalana Esperança, brings together MEPs to emphasise the critical role of wetlands in combating global heating, ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025. This event aims to galvanise support for,  and enhance understanding of the potential of Wetland Partnerships - international agreements in which the EU would support third countries to reverse wetland degradation, promote restoration and sustainable management, and enhance climate and biodiversity protection. There will be a particular focus on the Pantanal in Brazil - the world’s largest tropical wetland - and the need to collaborate to conserve and sustainably manage this biome for the prosperity of the communities, including indigenous and traditional communities, that inhabit this globally significant wetland.

Challenges & Opportunities for Amazon Sociobioeconomy Products in the EU Markets

Between 2017 and 2019, companies in the Brazilian Amazon exported forest-compatible products worth $298 million derived from non-timber forest resources, agroforestry systems, tropical fishing, aquaculture, and horticulture. This sum represents only 0.17% of the global market for these products, which exceeds $176 billion annually (Coslovsky, 2021)

What is the worth of products that help keep the forest standing?  What are the bottlenecks within Brazil and in international markets? How could EU stakeholders contribute to creating sustainable value chains for those products? The speakers and the public will delve into these questions, while tasting delicacies from the Amazon. Hosted by the Brazilian Mission to the European Union and the Brazilian Embassy in Brussels,  with the support of Apex Brasil.
