Amazon week 2025

BRUSSELS

 3 JUNE, 14:30 - 18:00 – BRUSSELS

Thon Hotel European District - Rue de la Loi, 75

(14:30-15:45) Panel: Climate change, forests and the Amazon bioeconomy: challenges for COP30

Brazil is inviting the world to come to Belém for “a COP in the Forest”. Although we should not lose sight of the fact that fossil fuels are by far the largest cause of climate change, accounting for roughly three-quarters of global GHG emissions, Forests will remain an important topic at COP 30 for the following reasons, among others:

- Deforestation accounts for around 10-15% of global GHG emissions;

- Forests account for a sizeable portion of biological carbon sequestration;

- Forests are very vulnerable to climate change, are important in the protection of biodiversity and a source of livelihoods, especially in the Amazon.

The Amazon bioeconomy, which is one of the most promising sources of economic opportunity for the people living in the region, suffers the impacts of climate change on the biome, in the form of extreme climate events (droughts and floods) which affect agricultural production, logistics and commercial activities connected to the Amazon bioeconomy.

The purpose of this panel is to explore the interconnections between climate, environmental, and economic trends, with a focus on the three pillars of sustainable development: social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The discussion will also provide an opportunity to examine how these issues can be addressed and debated within the specific context of Belém.

(16:15-17:30) From Forest Protection to sustainable Trade: Leveraging the Amazon’s Bioeconomy Beyond Its Borders

This panel will explore how the Amazon’s rich biodiversity can support sustainable development through a sustainable and inclusive bioeconomy. Building on forest protection efforts, the discussion will focus on the transformation of local knowledge and natural resources into value-added products that can reach global markets under principles of sustainable trade and environmental responsibility.

Key themes include enhancing market access for forest-based products, investing in capacity-building for local communities, and strengthening innovation and scientific research. The panel will also highlight how international cooperation can support equitable value chains, enabling the Amazon to contribute meaningfully to both regional development and global climate goals.
